Dear Colleagues and Friends,

It is our pleasure and privilege to heartily welcome you in Vladivostok for the 9th Asia Pacific Meeting of the International Society on Toxinology. As you know, the International Society on Toxinology was founded in 1962 by a group of scientists and clinicians interested in advancing the science of toxinology. The First International Meeting of the Society was hold in 1966 in Atlantic City. The Scientific Journal of the Society, Toxicon, was first published in 1963. The Asia Pacific Section of the Society was founded in 1987. Beginning from the first Conference in Singapore in 1987, activity of the Section was growing from year to year, demonstrating a significant scientific interest to diverse toxic flora and fauna of the biggest region of the World. Never before, Conferences of the Society have been to Russia. The Russian city of Vladivostok was first to be selected as a place of the regular Conference.

Vladivostok is a young city, especially if compared with millennial history of Russia. The Russians settled on the coast of Golden Horn Bay in 1860, and soon after it, in 1880 Vladivostok became a city. However, the town played an important role in the Russian history, economy, defense, and military construction. At present Vladivostok is not only an important industrial town, a Navy base, and port, but also a large well‐recognized Pacific center of culture, education, and science. The Far‐Eastern State Branch of the USSR Academy of Sciences was set up in 1932, when basic research in botany and some other scientific fields were started in the Russian Pacific coast area. More than dozen of Institutions belonging to the Russian Academy of Sciences are now located in Vladivostok and carry out research in biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics and many other sciences. The Far‐Eastern Federal University, recently founded in Vladivostok on the basis of the Far‐Eastern State University and three other Universities promises to become one of the modern Universities in Asia with well‐developed education and science.

Russian scientists from Moscow, Vladivostok, and other Russian scientific centers collaborate successfully with their colleagues from foreign countries, especially from Asia, for the studies on different aspects of toxinology.

We hope that our meeting will be fruitful and all participants will enjoy interesting presentations of their colleagues. The Scientific program was planned to provide a broad overview of the field of Animal, Plant and Microbial Toxins. Taking into attention that Vladivostok and Primorsky Region have a rich history and culture, we have tried to represent their peculiarities in our Social program. We would also like to thank the International Society on Toxinology for the opportunity to host this meeting.

Thank you for attending.
Prof. Eugene Grishin Prof. Valentin Stonik
